Night at the Museum: Recoding History

November 8 @ 11:00 am November 9 @ 3:00 pm

| Free

DESCRIPTION OF ASSETS:
History is about telling the stories of our past, and we want Miami’s story told through the collective creativity of the community, with a finished product accessible to all.

Participants will have access to HistoryMiami’s collection of unique historical photographs, newspaper articles, and documents from public archives.

Since the past starts yesterday, we would also like to start collecting digital photographs of notable people, places, and events around the community. We invite the community to contribute their own images that capture the evolving story of our great region.

THE CHALLENGE:
HistoryMiami would like assistance in creating an app-based digital solution that can address one of multiple of the following needs:

The app-based digital solution must address/will be judged on the following criteria:

Designing creative concepts that further HistoryMiami’s “Museum Without Walls” goal (i.e. educating our community about our vibrant past, even if they can’t physically visit the facility)
Making the physical museum experience more interactive

Organizing and meta-tagging both old (physical) and new (digital) photographs
Our goal is to leave the event with a functional app that can be used by the museum, its patrons and the community immediately.

LOGISTICS:
Registration begins Saturday, November 8 at 11:00 a.m. During this time you can sign-in, scope out the museum, share your skills, create teams, meet the judges, and then hacking will begin promptly at 12:00 p.m. (noon).

Settle in for a 24-intensive (and exciting) experience of bringing your ideas to life.

Add food, drinks, and more food all the way till Day 2. You will hack thru the night, grab a nap, drinks, maybe even a massage, and on Day 2, we have more hacking, more food, until hacking ends at 12:00 p.m. (noon). Judging will begin and prizes will be awarded thereafter.

Before the event, you may brainstorm ideas, form teams, create wireframes, and design logos, graphics, etc. but no coding until the event officially begins.

JUDGING CRITERIA:
Entries will be judged based upon the following criteria:

Relevance to the museum’s needs
Completeness (i.e. ability to immediately be used)
Functionality
Uniqueness
Design

PRIZES:
Grand Prize: $8,000 cash prize
Best use of Meta-tagging: $1,500 cash prize
Most Complete: $500 cash prize

Winners may be contacted in the future for consulting work to refine their apps for HistoryMiami.
